Definition
A synthetic form of the thyroid hormone thyroxine (T4), used as a replacement therapy for individuals whose thyroid glands do not produce enough on their own.
The medical equivalent of telling your metabolism to 'wake up and get to work' when your body is feeling sluggish.
Examples
My morning routine now consists of a glass of room-temperature water, a tiny levothyroxine pill, and an optimistic prayer that my metabolism wakes up before the coffee does.
