Republic of the Congo
Definition
A country located on the western coast of Central Africa, often referred to as Congo-Brazzaville to distinguish it from the larger, neighboring Democratic Republic of the Congo.
A sovereign state situated along the Equator, bordered by Gabon, Cameroon, the Central African Republic, the DRC, and the Angolan exclave of Cabinda.
Examples
It is always impressive how easily one can confuse the Republic of the Congo with its neighbor, as if world leaders haven't spent decades proving that mixing up two similarly-named giants is a perfect recipe for geopolitical bewilderment.
Navigating the distinction between the two Congos requires a level of cartographic precision usually reserved for people who think the Equator is just a fancy line drawn for aesthetic pleasure.
While the Democratic Republic of the Congo often grabs headlines for its complex, historical struggles, the Republic of the Congo stands quietly to the west, seemingly hoping no one accidentally adds an 'all-you-can-eat' civil war to their itinerary.
