Semaglutide
Definition
A glucagon-like peptide-1 (GLP-1) receptor agonist medication that stimulates insulin secretion, decreases glucagon secretion, slows gastric emptying, and promotes satiety, used primarily for managing type 2 diabetes and chronic weight management.
Administered orally (as in Rybelsus) or by subcutaneous injection (as in Ozempic or Wegovy), it mimics the action of the GLP-1 hormone to regulate blood sugar and appetite.
