Richard Glossip
Definition
Richard Glossip (born February 9, 1963) is an American who was convicted in 1997 of capital murder for allegedly hiring Justin Sneed to kill Barry Van Treese, the owner of the motel where Glossip worked as manager.
He spent over 27 years on death row in Oklahoma, with multiple executions halted due to legal challenges over innocence claims and prosecutorial misconduct regarding Sneed's mental health history.
In February 2025, the U.S. Supreme Court vacated his conviction and death sentence, ordering a new trial; as of 2026, he remains detained awaiting retrial on non-capital murder charges after a plea deal was rejected.
