She began as Dan Broderick's legal assistant and became his mistress during his bitter divorce from his first wife, Betty Broderick.
Kolkena and Broderick were tragically murdered by Betty in their home on November 5, 1989, in a case that became a media sensation and inspired numerous books, films, and the Netflix series 'Dirty John: The Betty Broderick Story'.
